Windmill
I spent yesterday driving all around doing postpartum visits and two early labour checks and still no more births! I got to have a couple of authentic Holland experiences though. One was getting a ride on the back of a Dutch bicycle over cobblestone streets (not too comfy!!) and the other was seeing my first windmill up close. I have to ask again what town it's from, but I'll attach a picture of it for you.

Are these windmills still in use, or just show for tourists? I love the image of you on the bicycle. My Dutch preceptor from 2nd year told a great story of her dad rushing off in the middle of the night when she was a kid to go get the midwife to bring her back to the house (on the back of his bike) to attend the birth of her sister. "What if he'd gotten a flat tire?" I asked, "Oh, no problem, you just wait a little bit and someone else would come by on a bike and would offer to take the midwife, and Dad would have walked home...that happened all the time!"
ReplyDeleteI wondered the same thing about the windmills, but that one is apparently still working. I saw one from a distance today and it was turning. It's true, there are many many bikes around here often with all sorts of interesting cargo attached in ingenious ways!
