Windmill

I spent yesterday driving all around doing postpartum visits and two early labour checks and still no more births! I got to have a couple of authentic Holland experiences though. One was getting a ride on the back of a Dutch bicycle over cobblestone streets (not too comfy!!) and the other was seeing my first windmill up close. I have to ask again what town it's from, but I'll attach a picture of it for you.

  1. Are these windmills still in use, or just show for tourists? I love the image of you on the bicycle. My Dutch preceptor from 2nd year told a great story of her dad rushing off in the middle of the night when she was a kid to go get the midwife to bring her back to the house (on the back of his bike) to attend the birth of her sister. "What if he'd gotten a flat tire?" I asked, "Oh, no problem, you just wait a little bit and someone else would come by on a bike and would offer to take the midwife, and Dad would have walked home...that happened all the time!"

  2. I wondered the same thing about the windmills, but that one is apparently still working. I saw one from a distance today and it was turning. It's true, there are many many bikes around here often with all sorts of interesting cargo attached in ingenious ways!
